Sell material data to AI without giving away the reference data you licensed
A materials archive mixes what a company measured itself with reference data it pays a database to use. We read 16 documents from 11 materials databases and informatics platforms, the newest on 2026-10-28, to show which part is yours to license.

Each vendor's own published terms were read through estate-fetch and stored whole (sha256 on every row). For every document, four questions were answered from the vendor's own words: who owns the business's data, vendor keeps aggregated or anonymised use, training AI on the business's data, export at exit. Every stated answer carries the sentence it rests on, checked against the stored text; 'not stated' means the document read does not address the question. A vendor with several documents reads 'varies' where they disagree. 11 vendors, 16 documents.

How it works
- Item 01
- Say what kind of materials data you hold and which databases or platforms it sits in.
- Item 02
- We separate what you measured from what a database licensed to you, using the vendors' own clauses.
- Item 03
- You get a written answer about your archive and choose whether to go further.
No materials database or informatics vendor paid to be on this board, and there are no affiliate links on this site. Each answer is our reading of a published document and is not legal advice about your own licence or dossier. How this site earns: when a materials company licenses its test data to a buyer we introduced, our fee is 12.5% of the deal, with a minimum, as its exclusive agent, or 10%, with a minimum, if its data joins a bundle or the pool, set out in writing beforehand; any fee a buyer pays us goes back to the seller as a credit.

Straight answers
Can I sell property data I copied out of a materials database?
Not where the database's terms say its content is its own. Total Materia's terms say the content in its platform and products is proprietary to and owned by Total Materia AG, so only the values your own lab measured are yours to license.(Materials database software data terms)
Who owns data I keep in a materials informatics platform?
Schrödinger's licence agreement says the licensee retains all ownership in its own content, information and data. Of the 11 materials vendors on our board, 8 say nothing on who owns a customer's data in the documents we read.(Materials database software data terms)
Do materials platforms keep anonymised copies of what we upload?
8 of the 11 vendors we read keep some right to aggregate or anonymise information, mostly personal and usage information. Polymerize, for example, says it may use aggregated or de-identified information for any lawful purpose.(Materials database software data terms)
Does REACH already put a price on my test data?
Yes, in part. Where registrants of one substance must share information, Implementing Regulation (EU) 2016/9 says the costs should be set in a fair, transparent and non-discriminatory way, and the parties keep annual records of costs incurred and compensation received.(Implementing Regulation (EU) 2016/9)
Who buys unpublished materials test data for AI?
83 Sciences says it trains on unpublished experimental data through partnerships with labs, and plans to expand into industry R&D. CuspAI runs an AI Materials Foundry of partners, while Periodic Labs and Radical AI generate their own data in automated labs, and CCDC takes deposited crystal structures.(Materials data buyers)
Can Materials Project or NOMAD data be part of what I sell?
Only on their licence terms. Content downloaded from either is under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 licence, and the Materials Project's GNoME structures carry a non-commercial licence, so neither is a seller's own measured data.(Materials database software data terms)
