Reference data and your own

Materials database software: whose data is it?

Updated

Materials database software holds two kinds of data at once: the vendor's reference values and the measurements a customer adds. The terms treat them very differently.

Reference data belongs to the database

Total Materia's terms say the materials, information and other content in its website, platform and standalone products are proprietary to and owned by Total Materia AG. Values copied from it into an internal sheet do not become the copier's to sell.

Your own measurements stay yours, where the terms say so

Schrödinger's end user licence agreement says the licensee retains all ownership and intellectual property rights in its own content, information and data. 8 of the 11 vendors on our board state no rule either way in the documents we read.

Open repositories come with a licence attached

The Materials Project and NOMAD both put downloaded content under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 licence, and the Project reminds users that its GNoME structures are licensed for non-commercial purposes only.

Where the law already sets a price on test data, see REACH data sharing.

Describe the materials data you hold

Where a database's terms say its content is its own, as Total Materia's do, that part is not yours to license. Tell us what your lab measured and where it is kept, and we will reply about the part you can license.

The materials data

Which testing produced most of the measurements?

  • A person reads each materials data enquiry
  • No database vendor named on the board is told what you send
  • No test report, formulation or data file is asked for here
